We can also offer your school the unique opportunity to participate in
a 'watch me grow project'. we will bring a baby Owlet to your school
every week and the children can weigh and measure the chick and plot
it's progress on a chart. They can record the changes that they have
observed in the chick over the week. These changes include, feather
growth, changes in the birds personality, sounds and it's sight. All of
these things change every week during the growth of a baby Owl.
The watch me grow project can run over eight or ten weeks, the
Owl is normally fully grown at the ten week stage. The children can
witness first hand the progress from a very small baby to a big owl in
these weeks. During this project, we talk about the sex of the owl and
how we can tell what it is, the food chain, life in the wild opposed
life in captivity, sight and hearing. The children will also see the
Owl feeding and watch as he devours a whole mouse, quite something when
he eats the mouse and leaves the tail hanging out! (This part is
optional of course).
We have found from past experience that the children really
look forward to seeing the change in the owl every week and ask more
and more questions about owls in general and we always then go on to
talk about many different subjects which have even included dinosaurs,
mammals and chickens! These conversations were of course led by the
children as their imaginations tend to run wild during these sessions!
The watch me grow project is available to children of all ages
and are usually run during the summer term, please ring to check
availability and to see what type of Owlet we have. At the moment we
have a baby Malaysian Wood Owl. Prices are £160 for six weeks or £220
for ten weeks. By the end of the ten weeks we should have the Owl
flying around the classroom!
